Forty years ago, Harriet Vanger disappeared from a family gathering on the
island owned and inhabited by the powerful Vanger clan. Her body was never
found, yet her uncle is convinced it was murder and that the killer is a
member of his own tightly knit but dysfunctional family. He employs
disgraced financial journalist Mikael Blomkvist and the tattooed, ruthless
computer hacker Lisbeth Salander to investigate. When the pair link
Harriet's disappearance to a number of grotesque murders from almost forty
years ago, they begin to unravel a dark and appalling family history. But
the Vangers are a secretive clan, and Blomkvist and Salander are about to
find out just how far they are prepared to go to protect themselves.
In Stockholm, Mikael Blomkvist is a leftist journalist who's lost a libel
case brought by a right-wing industrialist who set Blomkvist up. While he
awaits his jail sentence, a fading CEO hires him to find out who murdered
his niece - she disappeared 40 years ago. It happened on an island with few
suspects, almost all members of the magnate's family. Mikael combs through
files and news photos, interviews the investigator, and gets unanticipated
help from Lisbeth Salander, a computer hacker with few social skills, a
checkered childhood, and an abusive court-appointed guardian, the first of
several men we meet who hate women. The investigation puts them in danger.
Murder will out?
In Stockholm, the journalist and chief-editor of the magazine Millennium
Mikael Blomkvist is sentenced to three months in prison for slandering the
corrupt entrepreneur Hans-Erik Wennerström. Meanwhile the wealth
industrialist Henrik Vanger and his lawyer Dirch Frode hire the Milton
Security to investigate the life of Mikael, and the hacker Lisbeth Salander
finds that he is an honest man. Mikael is invited to travel to Hedeby
Island near Hedestadt to meet Henrik at his home that proposes him to
investigate who murdered his beloved nephew Harriet that disappeared forty
years ago. Mikael moves to Hedeby Island and Henrik delivers all the files
of the case. The journalist learns that all the members of the
dysfunctional Vanger family are suspect and the three brothers of Henrik
were Nazi. Meanwhile Lisbeth is hacking Mikael's computer and she decides
to help him with further information about the case. Henrik hires Lisbeth
to help Mikael and they discover a series of hideous murders connected to
the disappearance of Harriet.
